Chief Pricing Actuary at RGA - Via Financial Assets Actuarial Executive Search

Locatie: Amsterdam


  • Location Mandate: Netherlands &Nordic countries
  • Stage of Complexity of Business: The entity is in between start up and meaningful. The pricing team is currently small. This situation needs a hands on mentality for the Chief Pricing Actuary. The job is a combination of management skills, indepth pricing skills and a commercial attitude.
  • Span of control and leadership role: Span of control – currently 2 local people reporting Leadership role – Provide directions to other for quotes and product development processes
  • Work Demands-- Time Zone differences: Regular concentration, requiring attention to errors of detail. Work can be done within same or on occasion different time zones, which may require some extended work hours.
  • Travel Requirements: Some travel abroad requiring absences from home for approximate periods up to 10 days annually. 

Reports To: Managing Director

 Mission and Job Summary:

  • Leads and manages a pricing team to deliver quotes and reprices accurately within deadlines to the appropriate and required standards.
  • Ensure the location has the appropriate infrastructure (i.e. defined, approved and documented standards), training, and tools to price all new business and manage open in-force agreements included in the Mandate and to negotiate new deals and document agreements in placed deals.
  • Provides oversight for new business pricing and is responsible for the completion of day-to-day quotes.
  • Responsible for maintenance of the local pricing basis in order to stay competitive in the market
  • Manages the pricing team to complete Treaties on time


Strategic/ Operations:

  • Prepares, obtains approval and executes annual plan for actuarial department (key deliverables by responsibility), ensuring any issues/actions chart are managed and appropriate staffing to meet the business needs.
  • Plans own deadlines and on own initiative submits decisions and orientations to the required controls. Participates in setting strategy, policy and objectives with decision-making based on thorough understanding of end results.

 Financial Results:  

  • Contribute to winning business in a format that is profitable to RGA, which can be administered by RGA and does not cause foreseeable difficulties for RGA.
  • Strategic impact of actions on financial decisions or end results directly affects the company, suppliers or customers and will impact the company’s, suppliers or customer performance.

Business Development/ Client Relations:  

  • Puts in place an infrastructure that ensures RGA keeps abreast of local trends that may affect pricing function; such as regulations (may be shared or assigned to Corporate Actuary or Chief Risk Officer), competitors and clients (may be shared or assigned to others).
  • Builds strong relationship with client heads of actuarial or pricing functions and working relationships with competitor counterparts.

 Public Relations (Industry Involvement):  

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by organising and attending workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.
  • Assist in special projects and research and development as required by the Managing Director.
  • Attend relevant Actuarial Forums to network with senior personnel in client Actuarial teams and represent RGA.
  • Visit clients as appropriate and market specific services and handle business issues as they arise.

Infrastructure: Overall  

  • Ensure a Pricing Procedure Manual is current and in place for the Business Unit reflecting local implementation of Divisional and Corporate standards and practices.
  • If local practices are varied from Divisional or Corporate standards and practices, then pre-approval is to be received from Regional or Divisional Chief Pricing Actuary and same to be documented

Standards/Procedures and Tools:  

  • Ensure procedures and guidelines are effectively implemented and executed locally
  • Ensure proper filing (and backup) of all quotation files, pricing procedures and pricing bases with due respect to client confidentiality, integrity of the pricing function, and the protection of RGA’s pricing bases from competitors. 

Company Structure:  

Proactively participate and provide support to help build divisional function infrastructure. 

People Management:  

  • Leads, manages, and develops a Pricing team. Ensures compliance with RGA Re philosophy, procedures and guidelines, and provides evaluation of pricing quality and consistency.
  • Leads and manages work area activities including, but not limited to, team/department workflow; establishing and monitoring production and quality goals; periodic auditing of team’s pricing to ensure adherence to RGA Re guidelines. 


Ensure that the Company’s pricing standards and time service requirements are applied to handling quotes received.

Risk Management:

Ensures actuarial pricing, administrative and systems controls to safeguard corporate assets are in place and ensures processes are working as designed.



  • Bachelor’s Degree and specific related work experience (seven plus years). 
  • Fully accredited with actuarial designation.

Communication Skills:

Seeks agreement or settlement in contentious or potentially contentious situations.

Complexity of Reasoning:

  • Activities requiring the balancing of a number of objectives within a given timeframe by drawing on various resources.
  • Identification and weighting of new and diverse consequences using recognized criteria.
  • Adaptation of methods to obtain an appropriate result in an unprecedented situation.

Location Specific Details:

Strong preference to have knowledge of local mortality and disability products: a combination of Actuarial, legal and commercial skills.

Language skills:

Fluently in Dutch and English
